Violence Prevention Unit - Bystander Research Survey
The Wales Violence Prevention Unit has secured funding from Public Health Wales to deliver vital domestic abuse research, in partnership with the University of Exeter. The research will investigate the experiences and behaviours of those who witness or have concerns about domestic violence and abuse and its warning signs during COVID-19.
As part of this research, the team is asking members of the Welsh public to anonymously share their experience of witnessing or having concerns about domestic abuse during the pandemic, so bystanders can be equipped with the right knowledge, skills and training necessary to safely intervene and help more people in the future.
Please visit www.violencepreventionwales.co.uk/survey and follow the link to download the Participant Information Sheet, before deciding whether to take part in the survey.

Bishops issue guidance to parishes on support for victims of domestic abuse
Apr 29th, 2020
Since the UK-wide COVID-19 lockdown began on 23 March 2020, there has been a 49% increase in calls and online requests for help relating to domestic abuse.
The guidance you can find in this section includes information about how parishes can raise awareness of the issue, including a list of helplines and information about how to safely get help.
Bishop John Sherrington, who chairs the Domestic Abuse Group, said:
“Every person has a right to live their life free from violence, abuse, intimidation and fear. Catholic parishes can play an important role in the fighting the scourge of domestic abuse, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic where we are seeing some shocking statistics from leading domestic abuse organisations. My thanks go to those organisations and individuals already working so hard to ensure that people suffering domestic abuse can live safe lives.
“Every local situation will differ and so our new guidance is designed to be used as an introduction to start a local project. I hope that Catholics and parishes will be inspired to take this up in their local area.
“Violence of this kind should never be tolerated or justified. It is an offence against the dignity of the human person.”

Marriage Care's vital support continues during the covid-19 pandemic
Relationships are hard to do at the best of times but, right now, the Coronavirus is leading to massive changes in the way we live our lives.
Healthy marriages and relationships are going to be hugely important for getting us through self-isolation, social distancing and the income security pressures that so many of us will be facing.
So that we can continue to offer support to individuals and couples, from now, and until the current emergency is over, all our Counselling and Marriage Preparation sessions will be delivered online using secure webcam and video conferencing technology. This is just like having face-to-face support, except you talk to a trained Counsellor or Marriage Preparation Facilitator online using a secure video link (similar to Skype or FaceTime).
Research shows us that conflict between parents can have a very negative effect on children's development in terms of mental and physical health. With families forced to isolate and children no longer able to go to school, problems are potentially going to quickly escalate with no immediate prospect of relief. We urge people to seek expert help before they reach the breaking point. Marriage Care offers a donation- only counselling service so that anyone can access support whatever their financial circumstances.
We know that many engaged couples are coping with the heartbreak of deferred wedding plans and that will have undoubtedly put a strain on some relationships. Our Counselling Service can offer a skilled listening ear to help couples work through that disappointment together. And whilst some may have deferred wedding plans, preparation for married life can start now and need not be put on hold. We would encourage couples to use this time to book into one of our Marriage Preparation sessions - not simply to fulfil the pre-marriage requirements of the Church, but to take the time to build a deeper understanding of their unique relationship and be equipped with new communication tools that will help their love to grow and navigate the ordinary and, sometimes, extraordinary issues that life throws our way.
